The Troy Numbering System
The number key is created using one digit for the town, a letter ID for the cemetery or some special category, and a four-digit number for the grave (each cemetery's graves numbered from 0001).
The four-digit numbers are assigned in alphabetical order, and so numbered:
1 - CARMEL
2 - KENT
3 - PATTERSON
4 - PHILIPSTOWN
5 - PUTNAM VALLEY
6 - SOUTHEAST
(7A-7J are reserved for proposed Putnam State Veterans Cemetery)
Letters (A-X) indicate Cemetery Names, listed alphabetically by most commonly used name
Y - Indicates "wandering stones" when applicable
Z - Indicates long-lost and legendary cemeteries (including rumored Indian plots)
NH - Indicates non-historic cemeteris
0001-9999 - based on alphabetical listing by last name.
-----------------------------------------
Example: Troy #1P0005
1 = Town = Carmel
P = Cemetery = Old Methodist Cemetery, Mahopac
0005 = grave (by surname) = Mary Arnold
Included some alleged Indian cemeteries, based on a map of Indian sites (source unknown). They're shown in italics. A copy of the map is attached. |
